LIGHT VERSE #3.
I am very appreciative of the nice comments which have been made about my "poems." One kind person suggested that I send more. Here are a couple which, though not favorites, may bring a smile to someone.
A SONNET (About your Easter bonnet)
You said I never bought you anything.
You sniffed and wished that you were single still.
So once again I thought, This time I will
Find something for the perfect offering.
I pondered, Shall I fragrant roses bring?
Would you perhaps prefer some silly frill?
Ah, yes, as Easter neared I knew you'd thrill
To have a brand new bonnet be the thing.
We searched the stores and found it and I learned
To pay for it would break me, it was clear.
And then on Easter when your head was bare,
In disbelief I saw your hat you'd spurned.
And when in shock I asked "Your bonnet, dear?"
Dismayed, you cried, "Wear that and spoil my hair?!"
TURNABOUT
In other years my spouse and I
Attempting to outwit small fry
Would often to each other spell
The news we didn't wish to tell
Our offspring as their birthdays neared
Or Christmas came or wars were feared
Or change of job or raise was sought
Or new layette or crib was bought.
But changes came with passing years.
Our children and their brilliant peers
In Spanish, French, or Russian speak
While Dad and I with manner meek
In silence try to make it out.
(We don't know what it's all about!)
