Did He Pass Me By

I sat near your church; I heard you all sing:
"Jesus, I love You, I'll do anything,
I'll go anywhere, I'll obey all You ask,
I'll tell them You care, I'll do any task."
I listened awhile; I sat there alone.
No one asked me in; I was weak to the bone!
I was sinful and dirty with no place to go;
with no one to care—though I needed it so.

The music was lovely! "Do they mean what they say?"
I longed to know more, so I waited that day.
I hoped you would say what I longed so to hear,
that someone could love me, could conquer my fear.
I was so hungry, I'd had nothing to eat.
As you left you walked by me--right there on the street.
I reached out my hand, but you turned away,
you and all those who left church that day!

The sun was so hot; my throat was so dry:
"Just a cool cup of water?" still you made no reply.

Was it all of my sin that turned you away?
Or was it your pride, I looked shabby I'd say?
I remembered your singing: "Lord, I'll show them the way!"
I thought, "Who's this Jesus they sang of today?
Was He singing with them? Did He pass me by?
Did He see my tears as they fell from my eye?"

Please answer two questions, don't turn the page.
The answers aren't easy, but it won't take a sage:
are you the only "Jesus" some lost soul may see?
Will you follow His model and help set them free?
Don't pass up a chance to show others God's love
ignoring their needs like those folks did above!
We may never know what a kindness will do
by lending a hand to help others through.
OurEcho is a FREE SERVICE dedicated to capturing and sharing the individual "bits and pieces" that define our local communities. It might be a bit of interesting local history, an old photograph, a special memory or just a funny story. We are particularly interested in those fascinating and intriguing events/people (both large and small) that we all encounter as part of the human experience. It might be something that happened recently or something passed down to you through your family. Our goal is to provide a forum for local communities to share who they are through their stories and photographs. When you take the time to share these reflection with others, you help us better understand you, the world we live in, and if we are lucky, they help us better understand ourselves.
