You know what it feels like to be so scared that you can’t even move? I was in that position and I’ll never forget it. I waited in the dark, unable to see my hand in front of my face, afraid to even breathe.
It was hotter that morning than any other I could remember, even for August. The heat was stifling. It was difficult to take a breath without feeling like you were in a sauna. I did my chores around the farm as I usually did. I came inside of the house and turned the television on. All the stations had special reports about the eastern coastal states in chaos and anarchy. I sat on the edge of the couch, mesmerized by what I was seeing. Cameras showed the onslaught of nightmarish creatures that couldn’t possible exist. They appeared to be an alien form of locusts that devoured flesh. There simply was no escape from them. Luckily, the swarm was on the east coast, on the opposite side of the country from me. But they were moving my way.
As I watched flesh stripped to the bone, I was sickened, but couldn’t look away. I wasn’t what you would call a religious man, but what I saw changed my thoughts. There had been mass disappearances in the previous few months. Several of my family and friends were missing, but I didn’t put the pieces together. There were cries of UFO’s and terrorist acts, but the thought struck me too late that the reason why religious groups hadn’t claimed that it was God, was because they were the ones missing.
Just as the swarm hit the Midwest, Washington D.C. was hit by attacks from everywhere imaginable. If the media knew anything, they weren’t telling. The only news was that the attacks were totally by surprise and that we were losing. Of course, our government counterattacked, but we were seemingly outnumbered and outgunned, according to news reports. I watched the reports until the airwaves were knocked offline. I watched the snowy screen in utter disbelief. This was the United States, the most powerful nation in the world.
I heard from coffee shop talk that a group of scientists had accidentally opened up a gateway on the east coast that allowed creatures from another dimension to overtake us. Still there was more talking about that the European Union and Allied Arabic states had organized an attack on America while it was focused on internal issues. Whatever the reason, it was happening.
I had a small shelter below my house, about the size of a large bathroom. I had some supplies, but not enough to last me very long. I gathered everything I could fit in the shelter and hid myself away. Seconds seemed like hours and hours seemed like days. I listened for movement, any kind of movement. I heard the buzz of insects. The noise was so loud that I thought I would go mad. I don’t know if they knew I was there or not. I could hear my hogs squealing in agony as they were slaughtered.
Like I said before, I was never a religious man, but I had taken a Bible with me when I retreated to the shelter. I read it by lantern light. I was no expert by any means, but it sure sounded to me like Revelations had come true. I just had a weird feeling when I read it, like an awakening.
I decided that I would take a look. It had been quiet for awhile. I quietly climbed the ladder and opened the trap door. I scurried out and crawled to the window. I peered out the window and saw that while it should have been broad daylight, it was hazy and a depressing shade of gray. I could see bones scattered throughout the field and realized that it was the remains of my hog farm. I could see other movement. It was so subtle that I almost didn’t see it.
I heard a low boom that sounded like it was getting closer. Over the row of trees I could see a gigantic beast that was moving in my direction. It looked to be extremely slow, but it was so massive that when it walked, it covered a great distance with every stride. Creatures of different shapes and sizes moved beneath it. The only description that I could give of them was that they were malformed and demonic looking in nature with horns and tails. I remember losing control of my bladder. I quickly scrambled back down the ladder into the shelter.
It was a matter of time before the beasts would be on top of me. There wasn’t any hope of escape. I was trapped, but the thought of going outside and trying to get away was useless. I understood that every man had an appointed time to die, and mine was very soon. I dropped to my knees and prayed, not to be spared, but to be forgiven of all the unjust deeds that I had committed in life. I hadn’t been a bad man, but there were times when I could have been a better person. I remember crying uncontrollably as I finished my prayers. The earth shook and the sound of the gigantic beast kept getting closer. I sat down and waited.
An entirely different sound filled my ears than what I expected. Was it trumpets of some kind? I didn’t know. I felt compelled to look. I scrambled up the ladder. When I opened the trap door, brilliant light blinded me. I tried to block the light with my hand as I moved across the floor. I looked out the window and was amazed. I could see literally millions of people moving across the sparkling blue sky. At the head of the masses, I could see a single figure dressed in a white robe, riding a magnificent white stallion. The source of the light came from this man, but I couldn’t see his face, the light was too bright. I suddenly knew that everything would be alright. I watched the legion move across the sky. Some of the individuals were winged while others were dressed with attire from every time period. My body was covered with goose bumps. I watched them disappear beyond the horizon.
That was a few moments ago. I don’t know what happened, but I do know that I was one of the lucky ones. Don’t be caught off guard.
