The one item I use of my mother’s which she handed down to me is a pie server. It was given to me shortly after my husband and I were married. It comes in handy during our large family get-togethers such as Thanksgiving and Christmas, but also on the 4th of July for that home-made apple pie.
The funny thing is, I’m not much of a pie maker but sure glad the rest of my family is. My dad is famous for his pecan pie and mother has a great recipe for strawberry/ rhubarb.
At just about every family gathering we need a whole table just for the desserts. There seems to be a competition going on among family members of who can make the best pie.
My husband, Larry, who is diabetic has been experimenting making pumpkin pies with Splenda. Other than a smidge of an after-taste they aren't that bad.
I hadn’t given much thought about the pie server until I was asked recently the question about what we used of our mother’s in the kitchen. It brought back many fond memories of how often I’ve gone to the utensils drawer to pull out that pie server, knowing my family was on the way to our house.
It wasn’t until today that I looked closely at the back of my pie server and noticed the engraving on the back. It reads King Edward Silverplate.(NSC) This particular pattern was started shortly after I was born, over fifty years ago.
