In 2004 I had a scare with cancer. I went for a check up with my doctor and discovered I had a cyst on both of my ovaries. The one on the right was rather large. He referred me to a specialist at unc hospital in chapel hill. I had already been having pain in my stomach from fybroid tumors, which were inside my uterus. Since I was not planning to have any more children the doctor suggested a total hysterectomy be done. I had to have a special doctor because everything had to be tested. I had a low potential tumor of the ovaries. It would be a 3 hour surgery that was very serious. Luckily for me nothing had spread and I made it through the surgery. I could have found out sooner because 2 years before this was discovered I was suppose to have an ultrasound done and did not. I am just lucky it did not spread. I should have listened to my doctor and not have ignored my health. The recovery was tough but my husband and children were there for me every step of the way. I am so very thankful for that. I have to go every 6 months for check ups and I have to take hormone replacement therapy. I was only 42 years old when this happen to me and sometimes now I feel 10 years older. I don't have the strentgh I use to. I had to switch to a less stressful job after the surgery and my nerves bother me a lot now. I am thankful for my life and that I made it pass this part of it. The situation could have been much worse than it was.It just goes to show that you have to take care of your health and listen to your doctor.
