Week of Labor Day 1989
August 30 Wednesday
We got up at 3 A.M. and headed for Prescott, (our fun in the sun home). Arrived three hours later in time to go out to the Prescott Lake for the fish feeding time. A big one broke Clyde’s line then I caught a big one after a real battle. An 8 & 1/2 lb. Grass Carp. Even the city employees who fed the fish stayed and watched. I was too busy with the fish to worry about them watching.
Then Clyde caught a 6 & ½ lb, 22 inch long ’big mouth’ bass and 3 channel catfish and I caught one. Fun fun fun!!!
Our neighbor called around town and found a Mrs. White that had a instant camera who came and took a picture of us with the fish standing by the side of Old Red, our pickup. Then word spread and it seemed like everyone in town came by to see our catch. Probably they did as there is only 167 people living there.
Then came the job of dressing the fish. We buried the mess from the fish cleaning in the garden, bones and all. Just like the Indians used to do. Clyde filleted the fish and we put them in the freezer.
August 31 Thursday
Up at sunrise to fish again. We caught 3 lovely size channels using beejay fish bait, Mrs. White obligingly took their picture. Later I took her some tomatoes and a ripe cantaloupe. Gave our neighbor some of the fish fillets. Then loaded up the camper and headed home arriving in El Dorado around 4 P.M. Sorta unloaded. Did transfer the fish to the icebox in the house & turned off the propane to the camper. We lost the cover on the camper’s air conditioner some where on the way home.
September 1st Friday
Rained again ¾ inches and the onions were beginning to sprout again. So I pulled them & sliced them for the freezer. 15 containers done by noon. Then I started getting the pears ready for canning. We already have 50 pints canned. Clyde had to work as guard at the refinery.
September 2nd Saturday
Up at 3 A. M. to head out to my Tower family reunion in Coffeyville at the 1st Church of the Nazarene. Arrived early, filled up the pickup’s gas tank, eat breakfast at Mc Donald’s and cruised a few garage sales. During lunch break at the reunion we went to visit Aunt Vina at the local nursing home. Her step brother Bill and Betty Tower were there. Good visit.
Met Virgil & Nancy Clark at the reunion. Nancy spent most of the rest of the visiting time copying my Tower family notebook on the church’s copier. She seemed impressed with my family research. Finally left at 8 P.M. for the long way home. But well worth it!
September 3rd Sunday
Canned the big grass carp. Pressured five pints so the bones will be like salmon. Owen came down for a lunch of fried channel catfish and fresh cold slaw and a visit with us.
September 4th Monday Labor Day
Up early to fix lunch stuff for the Vining reunion in Ark City. We met Norman Craft, one of my cousins husband who wants to do family history. Let him take my three Vining and the Babcock notebooks. Back home wore out but had enough ump left for Clyde to mow the yard and visit with our neighbor, Arlo Hull.
