Nightmare The earth before me yawns First with only a slender gap As I watch, it widens beyond Searching for the edge I tap The widening crevice heightens my fear If only I could just escape Beyond understanding from this sphere One false move would be a mistake Where did this fear come from Clues and wonders of what it meant Was it only a dream when I was young The fear of one so innocent On this cliff a many a time It's time to face it and leave it behind In 1990 this was my 1st attempt to write a sonnet. The subject matter dealt with a recurring dream I’d had since childhood. Once I wrote the poem this particular dream never occurred again. |
