August 14, 2006 So my husband's grandmother passed away on Friday and we both took today, Monday, off to go down to Cushing, Oklahoma for funeral. Everything about the trip was dreary, starting with the rain and grey skies. The cats went outside and didn't want to come back in before we left which meant we had to chase them around. The car wouldn'd start and when it did the gas gage wasn't working so we had to stop at a gas station to fill it up just in case. But things got better...the sun came out and we had plenty of time. Oklahoma can be both really beautiful and totally depressing. Yale and Cushing in particular can just be a little sad. Some of that may be that most of the times we go there are for funerals or family reunions. The funeral service was well, a funeral service. Which brings me to the reflection that when I die, despite the fact I have never been a drinker or a partier, I may want everyone to get totally sloshed and play loud music. Minnie Mae Hyle Ashley loved roses and family. She was a nurse and then a pink lady at the hospital. She was 94. The amount of change that she must seen in her life is mind-boggling. From horses to space shuttles. Imagine. Exactly what have we been stressing about? |
