The Last Melon From the Patch

I remember the last watermelon from the patch.
Oh yes, I remember that one well
My sister gave it to me for my husband
telling me how sweet it would be
I placed it in my van and drove home
but, my arms were full with clutter
so left the melon behind
I’ll get it tomorrow.

I remember it
rolling around like a bowling ball
when I turned the first corner that next day
and thinking don’t forget the watermelon
he’ll want to eat it while it’s fresh and sweet.

It was the next evening
when I opened the back van door
and the melon fell at my feet
splattering its juice on my panty hose
that I again remembered that melon

There in this huge parking lot
I picked up the broken rind
and placed it on the floor mat
Hoping no one would see
Then went inside for my class on poetry

Later when I returned home
and I told my husband about the melon
the last melon, the v-e-r-y last
melon from the patch
then asked for a pledge of secrecy

If my sister ever asks you
how you liked the watermelon
be sure to tell her it was oh so sweet
and I will always remember
that last, that very last, melon from the patch.
