MY SELF

Within this world I have been
many different selves.
For a friend I was a dreamer
because she did not know how.
Once I was an angel
as someone I loved died.
I have been a liar
when the truth just wouldn't do.
I have been the strong one
when someone else was weak.
When my strength was just to much,
I've pretended not to be
At times I've been alone
when the crowd got into trouble
I've been the life of the party
when lonely hurt to much
I've even been a thief
when hunger overcame me
I've cheated death
I've stolen time
Once or twice I've killed a love
before it could kill me
I've lived with strangers
and tried to be
who they wanted for their own
I've lived within a shadow
and tried to call it home
