Listen to voice recording:
I asked my father to tell me a story of something that happened in his childhood that he saw as significant.

When I was working at the Georgia Theater as an usher, one of our duties on a weekly basis was to prepare for the next attraction. And it was going to be an MGM film called “The Bribe” with Robert Taylor and Ava Gardner.
Putting up the marquee, which meant getting on a ladder... a 12 foot ladder... and working about 15 feet above the side walk.
I had just put Ava Gardner’s name up on the big letters and the “G” in Gardner fell and almost hit a paying customer waiting for his movie. It missed him by probably less than a foot.
I’ve often speculated... you know... how my life would have been very different had that "G" hit him. Because it weighted several pounds I would guess.
I was always lucky in things like that.
