Well, since many of the readers (actually it was one reader)have ask Me questions about Uncle Fossill, such as what He looks like, where He came from and various and sundry other items of interest,I feel that it is time to try and add a little background and try to explain how he came about. (or as Uncle Fossill would say, ("Splain it a bit") I was visiting with my Great Nephew one saturday morning (He was about 6 at the time) and we were walking around in the back yard, well He started asking me a lot of questions that I couldent answer, questions like "Why does the grass grow over there and non grows in that spot?"Or worse questions like "Uncle Bobby, why is that dirt red and that dirt over there brown?"So as I did not wish to "appear" dumb,I began to make up stories as to why no grass grew in a certain spot in the back yard (an Indian Chief had cursed that spot many years ago)and why was the dirt red? (Oh well once a long time ago, there was a great battle fought on that very spot, and the ground is still red because of all the blood from all the brave warriors that fell in that battle.)When He ask Me who had told me all this, and how did I know all about the History of the things that happened in His back yard,I had to think pretty fast,so I (being and Uncle)told Him that "my uncle had told me all about it when I was about your age."Well His next question sort of perplexed me a bit,He ask "well Uncle Bobby, what was your Uncles name?"I was really caught off guard a bit by that question,so I fumbled around in my brain a bit for a name, and all I could hit on at the moment was a dinosaur fossil, since He was an avid collector of those little dinosaur figures sold in toy stores and,we had been discussing them a bit before we had went out side and He had named correctly all the ones He had,the name Fossil was right there lurking in my mind,so I told Him that the Uncle's name who had told me all about the history was my uncle fossill, and there you have it.Uncle Fossill was born right then and there. Besides,My college dictionary defines the word "Fossil" as a remnant or trace of an organism" and also "One that is outdated or antiquated or a person with outmoded ideas. An obsolete word or word element".Well Uncle Fossill certainly fits all those descriptions,at least in my mind he does. As for what Uncle Fossill looks like,I would say that Uncle Fossill is between the ages of 35 and 95,some times He dresses in overalls and sometimes he wears a coonskin cap,He has a beard and His hair is sort of grayish,He is around 6 feet tall, sort of skinny with long legs and always seems to enjoy every conversation he is having and is always, always glad to see you when you come to visit.I guess you could say that he sort of resembles a back woods Santa Clause or maybe even Davy Crockett. At any rate,I hope My Uncle Fossill is around for a long time, because He is the sort of person that you would want your uncle to be and I for one,am glad to call Him my friend.:) Bob Mitchum |
