Learning To Be Me

I'm learning to deal with cancer
And I'm learning to savor today
At last I'm learning that food
won't bring me joy, when I'm feeling low
And I'm learning not to depend on others for my energy
Now I'm learning not to put myself down
And I'm learning (though it's difficult)
Not to wait for other's approval
So I'm learning to create my own happiness
When I used to expect my joy from others
And I'm learning that it's much
Much easier to be me when I do these things

(Written for someone who's very special to me. We deal with some of the same issues, though I've not had cancer.)
