He stands proudly,
This young boy in the hat.
He is just "knee high to a grasshopper",
As the saying goes
But big and old and strong enough
To hold the young colt still.
The colt was bigger than the boy
And lots more stronger too
The boy managed to hold him still enough
To have a hurried picture snapped
Except the colt missed his mother
And looked away .... forever.
The little boy in the overalls and hat
Remain forever in my mind
I never knew him way back then
But I love to think of him
As a "young sprout" growing up
Running, having fun, shyly smiling.
I knew him when he was older
And right before he died
He told me stories of his childhood
The way he'd ride the horses,
And go hunting with his dog.
I knew him as a gentle man
I loved him as a father
But I often --- still ---
Remember him, as
The young boy in the hat.
