The Devil Made Me Do It

Four children gathered around their mother one Saturday afternoon. Each sat cross legged on the floor, waiting expectantly for their mother to tell them a story. Lauren, the oldest, sat between Isaac and Luke, the youngest. Adam sat in the center, closest to his mother’s feet.

Their mother picked up the book in her lap and opened to the beginning. “Today, I’m going to tell you the story of how Adam and Eve came to leave the Garden of Eden,” she explained, and proceeded to do so. She told about how the devil appeared to Eve in the form of a snake, and how the devil then convinced Eve to eat the fruit from the forbidden tree, who in turn gave some to Adam. Their mother’s voice became low and she spoke more slowly as she told how God appeared before Adam and Eve, questioning them about the fruit of the forbidden tree. Both Adam and Eve accused another for their disobedience. Adam told God Eve gave him the fruit, and when God turned to Eve, she said the devil tricked her into eating the fruit. Tami’s voice took on a commanding tone. Each child listened with rapt attention, as she quoted the portion of Genesis where God banished Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden.

Once story time was over, Lauren, Isaac, and Luke went downstairs to play. Instead of following his brothers and sister downstairs, Adam sat down in a chair next to the goldfish bowl. As he watched the fish swim around the perimeter of the bowl, Adam said, “That darned old devil made me eat that apple!”
