Jim Baggett One More Blanket
By
Jim Baggett

On September twenty third two thousand and six I married my wife.

A short small framed woman, blue eye’s, she and her big smile walked away with

My heart as well as my soul! It wasn't long until the sting of the cool fall air had arrived!

The leaves on the maple trees were now in full color with a hint of frost in the air.

These were signs that Old Man Winter was on the way with colder nights yet to come!

Being newly weds my wife and I were trying to a just are lives as we were now making

two homes into one.

As I carried a big box into the house I ask where do you want me to put this one.

Smiling she said O' great I have been looking for that box; put it in our bedroom please.

Never giving it much thought I placed the box at the foot of the bed.

As I went back down the hall way I heard the furnace come on, I then looked at the

thermostat to find it was set on seventy five degrees so I turned it down.

There sixty five will do for now I thought to myself, to me it was hot at the time.

I then went about brining the rest of the things and the boxes into the house.

Working as fast as I could trying to be as much help as I could be to Wanda my wife.

Because she was working her little self just as hard as she could trying to keep up

with me always smiling as she went along. As she would tell me where to put things

and into what room I should put them!

I as well as she was glad to see the last box that was carried into the house.

Lets take a break Wanda said to me, how about some lunch? Would you like to have?

something to eat she asked. Sure I replied sounds like a good ideal to me.

As we sat there eating our lunch Wanda said to me it's cold in here! Cold I replied?

Not to me it’s just right! You have been working hard this morning and now you are

just cooling down some that’s all. Now Wanda got up from the table never saying a word

as she went down the hall. A few minutes latter she returned to the table and I

smiled when I heard the furnace come on.

Being a big man as myself it don't take a whole lot of heat for me so I asked her again

are you cold? Yes I stay cold on days like this! Telling myself you'll just have to adjust

big boy there’s got to be some compromise in this some where.

It was not long the days seem to go by faster as you get older at lest for me thy do;

the month of November was here as the cold north wind was here also!

Wanda had put two hand sewn quilts on the bed along with the normal things a women

puts on her bed and in the night we would snuggle up tight all confee together.

One night I woke up hotter then all blue blazes throwing the blankets off myself I got

up staggered down the hall to see what setting the thermostat was on!

To my surprise Wanda had put it on seventy five degrees; once again I move it back to

sixty eight returning back to bed she asked me if something was wrong?

The next morning I told her it was to hot in the bedroom for me, she replied I'll put

another blanket on the bed than maybe you'll not be so hot tonight.

What didn't she understand? I was already to hot and she is going to put another

blanket on the bed? Honey, were you cold last night I asked?

Why yes she said! If you will turn the thermostat down, I’ll just put one more blanket on

our bed and things will be just find, you'll see!

Well that night we set the thermostat on sixty five and she put one more blanket on

the bed, snug as a bug we were I sleep all night through.

Now old man winter had set in for the long haul it must have been four weeks before

we got a break in the weather. One night I had stayed up a little later then Wanda

to watch some show on the TV. Now when I did go to bed I tried to slip in beside her

trying to not wake her.

As I crawled in slipping under the covers I pulled them up under my chin, then I

noticed why I couldn't even turn over from the wait of the covers; but one things

for sure it wasn't cold in there. The next morning Wanda asked me did you sleep well?

Then she said I don't think I even turned over all night. By the way honey will you do

for me a favor, will you take the empty box in the bedroom out for me?

Sure I said what was in it any way? She smiled and said there was blankets in it but

there was only one left in it so I put it on the bed.

You put another one on the bed? Sure WANDA said with a smile!

What’s one more blanket? I love you honey its OK spring time is coming
