The Autumn Gate

When the Lord gave me this poem, I was living in New York. Shortly after, I received a job offer which required me to move to Florida. I had never lived outside New York State, so the prospects of moving that distance--away from family, friends and church connections was difficult. I believe "The Autumn Gate" was the catalyst that prepared me for that decision. I was only there five months, but I learned so much during that time--about God and about myself. I hope this poem will encourage others facing similar situations to prayerfully trust God. Janet

I traveled a narrow country lane
vexed with trails, racked with pain,
but I know that I am not alone,
that one day He will lead me Home.

I've often heard God speak my name.
He's never offered wealth or fame,
but love and comfort, joy and peace
He has promised to increase.

When trials come, I've talked with Him,
and sought to keep myself from sin.
But when I've faltered, He's been there
to reaffirm His love and care.

Today, I reached the Autumn Gate.
‘Twas not by chance, nor by fate.
The lane I had followed did not end,
but from that gate, I heard my Friend:

"This is a place you've never been . . .
and you'll never pass this way again."
I paused a while to contemplate
what might lay beyond the gate.
Was there a dwelling? large or small?
Would there be friends, joys to recall?
"Beyond the gate are peace and joy . . .
the kind that trials cannot destroy."

It all seems full of mystery,
the kind that beckons, "Come and see."
As I drew closer to the gate,
I heard Him say, "Don't hesitate."

In that moment, my choice was clear;
His gentle whispers eased my fear.
As I raised the latch to enter there,
I heard Him say, "You're in My care."

Though many years have come and gone,
He's still the One my faith rests on.
I know He'll guide me day by day
and He will not lead me astray.

The path ahead's unknown to me,
but my Lord will keep me company.
Without His presence, I couldn't go on;
I must have Him to lean upon.
