A family photograph from the 1940s rests on the dusty shelf. It reaches back to the mule days of homemade clothes and soap, when a crop's success or failure held a family's fate. Too much rain, or not enough-- grandfather's face became a gauge when nature wobbled too far either way. His blue eyes, though in black and white now, also reflected homespun joy when his faith in the land kept his six children fed for one more season. |
