Today I Took A Walk In the Clouds
Today we went for a ride, a ride up many roads. Going past towns called Snohomish, Smokey Point, Mount Vernon, Sedro Wooley, Concrete, Marblemount, and so on. We passed Indian reservations, and Casino’s, and malls. We went around the out skirts of Seattle. Sometimes we only saw an occasional gas station and a house for miles, always heading for the same thing. We were on our way to see the Upper Skagit Bald Eagle Festival. It didn’t start till Jan 26, but we didn’t know that, and the Eagle’s didn’t know that either.
The Salmon were starting their winter run, where they come up from the ocean to spawn. Needless to say the Eagles are there too. Some have said that many hundred’s have been seen between November and February in the past years. I don’t know but I would have loved to have seen them. Maybe today would be the day. We are heading for the Upper Skagit River. My heart is pounding and the camera is loaded with fresh batteries and the Salmon are starting their run. Wow! And I am about to see it all.
On this drive, like I said we will go quite a few miles, go past many towns and see many things. One of those things is “the clouds”. The only time in my life I had ever been close enough to the clouds was on an occasional flight from wherever to wherever. I had never even given it thought, what it might look like to be surrounded by the clouds, to be able to put your hand out and feel the clouds as they drifted past you. I even saw a rainbow, so close to me that I could actually see it touching the field and the ground, and no there was no pot of gold. To me the pot of gold was the fact that it was there, and so was I, and I was seeing it. What a blessing that was.
Driving up the road we could see the mountains looming in the foreground, snow peppered the ground as we got closer, the air became colder and the nip in the air told you we were closer to someplace I had never been. To me it was closer to Heaven. The peaks were covered with snow and it was said that there were people up there snow boarding and skiing, not me. The closer we got the more beautiful it became. As we went through the pass the mountains fell away and the world opened up to our view. There running off to the right of our car was a river, it’s green blue water running full throttle, rushing over the rocks and sand banks. Logs and drift wood spotted the shore line. Tree’s flanked the banks and there in the very top of the trees in all their majestic glory were the Eagle’s. Yes our American eagle, in it own sanctuary, not in a cage but flying free. I stood looking at it, as it sat there looking at me. I saw 8 Eagles that day, but it was 8 more than I would have seen had I stayed at home.
So at the end of this beautiful day we were tired and happy and fulfilled, relaxed and enjoying the time we had spent together. “What a beautiful day”. I realize that in the winter time there are some dreary, dark, rainy, and even snowy days but days like today make it all worth while, and days like today make it easier to function on those other days. So at the end of this day when my weary mind seeks out the rest it requires to survive, I am blessed to have had such “a beautiful day”. To my family I say “Thank’s”
