Sparkling Memories

Sparkling Memories

I remember hand-cranked ice cream taking forever to be ready.

I remember the sputter of ladyfingers and swish of pinwheels.

I remember setting the dry grass on fire in our backyard.

I remember lemonade, corn on the cob, and hot, hot days.

I remember creating fiery circles in the dusk

with a sparkler in my hand.

I remember Dad shooting roman candles across an open field.

Even fifty years later, I remember long ago 4th of Julys,

And in my memories the sparkler is as bright as ever.
