Treasures of the Sea

Somewhere sometime, along time ago or even last week, someone threw out a dish, a glass, a bottle. They threw it over the side of their boat, or off the island, or off the dock, “who knows”? It might have even gone down with the ship as it sank.. But some how, some way what ever it was went deep into the ocean, washing back and forth as the sea drifted in and out. Something made of glass, porcelain. ”It”, what ever it was, sank beneath the water, sometimes so deep, it most surly would never be seen again. But on a special day, if dreams come true, and storm’s happen, jewels wash ashore. Somewhere deep down these items wash back and forth and hit rocks and other shells and other items. They break in to all sized pieces and they wash back and forth. They become very smooth and polished; their colors change from the brilliant colors they were to the soft colors they have become.

On a bright sunny morning, bucket in hand two young children and several adults scurry back and forth across the beach, searching for the elusive jewels. A flash of light captures the glint of the jewels as the sun skirts across the rocky shoal. Here and there lying snugly amongst the rocks, sometimes out in the open, sometimes hidden till the light hits it, these jewels are for the imagination to ponder, think about how they got there, and envision the story of where they came from and how they got to where they are now. What were they originally? What did they look like before they broke into those little shinny pieces you find now? Do you put them in a jar and save them or do you make something out of them?

If you ever get a chance to go to the ocean, look for the jewels that the sea gives you. They come in many colors as you can see from the pictures, I save them for the pleasure, and when the sun light in the summer afternoon hits them and they sparkle, it bring a twinkle to my eyes and a smile to my heart, and I wonder.
