Books that Inspire Me
By Donald Jones
Books have always been my friends for as long as I have been able to turn a page. One thing you do when you are homebound, as I was in my youth, is to read. Our house had no shortage of books. One of my mothers weakness was she could never say no to a book salesmen. For that weakness I am thankful. Books have always been my windows into the rest of the world. Even to day many of my friends will call to ask me about something because they know I have an extensive library. If I don’t know the answer to their question I usually can find it somewhere among my books.
One of my sources of strength, that I rely on as a writer, is from someone I admire immensely. Judy Reeves is the author of “A WRITER‘S BOOK OF DAYS” and “THE WRITER’S RETREAT KIT”. These books have had the greatest influences on me for inspiration to write. Any time I need an idea, I go to her books for help. They are books I give as gifts to my friends who have expressed a desire to write. Her books are a 365, day exercise for me as a writer, to stay fresh and avoid writer’s block. No mater who you are there is something to make you write. If you need to get away and can’t, her “RETREAT KIT” will give you an endless supply of ideas to help keep the creativity going.
Another author that has given me encouragement is Stephen King. His book “Memoir of The Craft On Writing”, about his life as a writer and where and how he gets ideas for characters and stories is an education. His comments about seeing his life like snap shots of events, inspired me to use that method to write about the events in my own life. Aside from his book, he has also written an article about writing that has also been of great value to me, ”EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT WRITING SUCCESSFULLY IN TEN MINUTES”. This article was published in the 2002 Edition of “THE WRITER’S HANDBOOK” found at any good library.
