On Monday night an old high school friend and I saw the movie Miss Potter.
I’d wanted to see the movie about the life of the famous children’s writer, Beatrix Potter, ever since I learned about the upcoming movie. I must tell you it was excellent, but it did make me cry. Seeing the characters such as Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle-Duck and many more come to life from the pages of the artist’s sketch book to the finished printed book was handled well by the producers. I must say being a writer was difficult for most women during the time Miss Potter lived, but she prevailed. The story isn’t just about an artist/ writer, but a truly heartbreaking romance. I consider it a must see for all writers and readers.

While watching the movie, I was already in a sad frame of mind over hearing about the loss/ death of a dear writing friend and fellow member of Kansas Authors Club. (Actually our club lost three dear fellow writers this week.) Julia was a sweet, kind spirited, soft-spoken woman and she will be dearly missed.

Seeing the movie made me think of Julia and I saw a likeness in the two writers. A little in the way they talk, maybe something in their demeanor, but I can’t quite put my finger on exactly what it is yet.

This afternoon when walking from my car to the burial site to say a fond farewell to my writing friend, my high school classmate nudged me and I nodded yes that I had seen it too. There two strides from my car were two tombstones side-by-side. One stone was inscribed POTTER and the other BUNN. All the BUNN needed was a Y for it to read as BUNNY.

Julia’s husband, Ralph graciously offered a flower to those in attendance.
I took a red rose and placed it here beside my computer tonight. My prayer is that Julia will soon be writing across GOD’S blue Kansas sky.
