St. Simons Island, Ga. Lighthouse, fronted by Gazebo on Beach Side. The ORIGINAL was
a dream of a young architect from Granville, Massachusetts named James Gould.
The tower was completed in 1808 & GOULD was
its' keeper for 27 yrs.
It now is a white conical tower attached to a brick dwelling. The small house was once the lightkeeper's cottage. Original oil lamps & chains were replaced by a Fresnel lens
(French, hand-made) and timers in 1953, eliminating the need for a keeper.
St. Simons Island, Ga. Lighthouse, a silhouette.
The current lighthouse dates since 1872 & stands twenty-five feet from the original site.
The first was destroyed by the Confederate Army in 1862 (the original site is still marked by ropes). The current structure was built by Charles Cluskey, a most renowned Ga.architect.
MARSHES of Glynn- made famous by renowned poet, Sydney Lanier. This photo is taken from our
tall bridge, named for same poet.
Jekyll Island is shown in background on this shot of the Golden Isles.* *(Golden Isles Includes St. Simons, Jekyll, and Sea Island, Ga. with County Seat of Brunswick, Ga. / Mainland)
North End of Jekyll Island Beaches, Ga. This Island was once called "Millionaires' Island" thanks to the sirnames of Rockefeller, Morgan, etc. building summer "cottages" and frequenting the beaches.
During WWII, the government was worried over safety of the occupants (believing such well-known families might be subject to kidnapping attempts by submarine) and insisted they not vacation there.
Jekyll is now a Ga. State owned "Park."
