Do Ghosts go to Church?

Once upon a time El Dorado had a Peter Pan ice cream store on North Main street. After we moved to the 1000 South Atchison we would go to Peter Pan for hamburgers because the grandchildren loved to finish their meal with an ice cream cone of their favorite flavor.

The easiest route to Peter Pan from our home was north on Denver street and on across Central and north to Third because those streets were classified as through streets. Then we would drive east to Peter Pan.

When my granddaughter, Diana was small, she informed us that she didn’t like to go that way. In fact she said it scared her and she would start crying when we went that way. We tried to find out why she was so scared and she finally told us she didn’t like the GHOSTS.

Now you and I know there is no such thing, but two year old Diana knew better as she had seen them with her very own eyes.. When we bribed her with the promise of an extra dip of ice cream, she said she would show us the ghosts.

Now you notice the plural. We drove along north Denver past the Middle School, then a block of older houses, then Diana suddenly yelled ”there they are.” I quickly stopped the car in the third block of North Denver in front of the St. John’s Catholic Church and she showed us the white statue of Mother Mary and baby Jesus. Then she whispered “there are more around the other side” and sure enough there was Saint Francis and the animals.

We had an ‘on the spot’ lesson about statues. Diana still thought the statues should be colored like they are in her Bible instead of white like Casper the Ghost.
