You've captured the WWII years so well with your memories as written here. Even though I was only a child during that time, I still remember the ration books. My mother saved the grease from cooking in jars and we took it to the butcher shop for making soap, I believe. One of my clearest memories during that time was riding a troop train from Chicago to Phoenix when I was 5. It was filled with servicemen who all gave gum and candy to the little girl with the red curls. What a haul I made! I'm looking forward to the next installment.
