What a beautiful, terrifying story! In the midst of such beauty and tranquility, the fear of those who live in Cuba pricks like a thorn among roses. Thank you for such insight and for sharing with us. B. Carpenter

Amazing for you and Mariela to meet as you did. I'm sure she holds your whispers and obvious love deep in her heart. If, and when you return to this treacherous but beautiful island, I hope you find this lovely girl again, maybe next time the nurse she longs to be.

And we wonder why these people take such risks trying to reach our shores. Very sad and it is impossible to imagine living that kind of life. Well done...

Hi Bonnie,
Kudos for the well-deserved award on this story. I'm so thankful to reside in a free country, especially after reading about Mariela. The photos you include with your writings are like extra frosting on an already delicious cake. Thanks for a slice of it.

What a beautiful story, asnd so well told. It tears at my heart to think of the lives those Cubans live, and the little freedom they have.

Oh Bonnie, this story will haunt me for months to come...we who live in freedom have so much and yet sometimes forget how blessed we are. I know you wanted to leave every material thing you could spare with Mariela...your words of hope which you whispered to her are the most valuable.
