What a neat story. The last line, "They didn’t see me – they saw who I wanted to be!" is a statement we all want to happen to us. Gail

And little boys (and girls) still want to play with trains! You just had the marvelous opportunity to work with and ride the real thing during the '40's, Dick. My grandchildren currently love the "Thomas the Train" books and train set pieces. "The Little Engine That Could" remains one of the best books ever written for encouraging both children and grown-ups! I enjoyed your story very much. ~ Susan

In reading this again I realized I was just a year old than Dick as I graduated in 1942. The only connection to trains I had out in the Flinhills of Kansas was the long, lonesome wail carried across the hill by the Kansas winds. I really enjoyed your experiences.

Very picturesque. I remember riding an old steam engine a few times as a child. My dad knew the engineer; we didn't go far, but it was a thrill I'll never forget. Thanks for sharing. Janet
