Pat yourself on the back. We should all be in charge of our own writing. Money isn't everything. Stand tall Mike! Gail

Hi Mike,

That "all rights" thing really irks me, too. Me and a whole lot of other writers. But if you talk it over with editors, sometimes they give you ways out. One that I have written for a number of times told me I can change something in the article and use it again. It doesn't have to be a major revision, just so that it is not word for word as the one they purchased. That's something we can work with. But you need to find out before you sign your rights away. I sold one children's story for all rights, and would you believe the magazine has kept it in their files, never published it. They paid me on acceptance, but the story has never seen the light of day, and to use it again, I would have to write to the President of a large church denomination and beg. And I'm not about to do that. Your own integrity becomes more important than the check, and that can only be a good thing. There are plenty of other places that take first rights or second rights, not all. I'm glad you brought this to other writers' attention here at OurEcho.

Thanks, Nancy

This is a publication that could can and probably will do very well.
They have a great theme.

I was excited, until I talked to the senior editor.

They saw some one who could bring them writers. I can do that, but I would feel
bad. I'd feel like I was leading lambs to slaughter.

Then again, These writers know better.
They would not go for the contract.
I would look like the evil one who suggested it to them.

I stand my ground.

Thanks for the heads up. This is excellent information for a novice like me. BJ

Thanx Michael. There is so much to learn about writing, about our world,
about politics and even about ourselves. We will never learn it all, but every new piece of nformation shared is a blessing. This is a great forum for sharing it.

In my humble opinion, you made the right decision, Mike. Plus, you were wise to share this info with other writers.
God bless you,
Sandi in FL.

I may have worn the publisher down. They emailed the other day and asked, "What do you want changed in the contract?"

I said, "Take out the all rights issue, and I'll reel them in for you."
