Wasn't it fun to eat fudge with a spoon when it wouldn't set up right. Now we just dump in powdered sugar until the fudge is the right consistency. But I still like to eat spoon fudge. Thanks for the good memories, Mom

Oh my, am I hungry for a snack now! One of the perks of being a small-town librarian is patrons bring me produce from their garden--I'm looking forward to the first tomatoes of the season! I, too, love bread, mayo, and thick-sliced tomato sandwiches. Great nostalgic read. Carol

Oh, how I wish that I could send my 6 year old twins out into the pasture to run and play.

I want to know how grandma made the pancakes shaped like a swan. :) Did she just pore the batter in that pattern? I've tried for Mickey Mouse ears but wasn't very successful.

I like to use a heart cookie cutter with my chocolate chip pancakes.

I'm hungry now. :)

Yes, she would just pour the batter into the shape she wanted. Sometimes she made the shape and then figured out what to call it (like looking at clouds). You have to keep the shapes small enough to flip over without breaking off parts.

I find myself constantly on the search for muffins with consistency like those we ate on those long-ago days! How I miss them. Wonder what the difference is. A local cook makes "LaFitte Muffins" which reminds me of those golden oldies. Carol

Well to tell it like it is, we don't have the ingredients like we used to have. The flour is more refined, we used to use rendered lard and probably they have messed with the baking powder and soda. I know salt is not like it used to be. Even the water we use in recipes has many chemicals that never used to be in it. G

Ginger, I remember working one summer at that hambuger place. Mom would buy a sack full all the same; when I wanted mine plain--nothing but the burger & bun. I still order mine like that many times.

What was the name of that place? Do you remember?

D&A or D&S Sandwich Shop? Mom and I were trying to remember. It was owned and operated by the Doanes.

My 1969 El Dorado City Directory says D & A Sandwich Shop, 505 N. Main; owner Mrs. Winnie Doane. Mom
