About the intelligence of elephants - no one yet knows just how intelligent they really are. It is known that they are family and society oriented animals. They have feelings just like humans do. Human lives have been saved many times because of the intelligence of elephants. In the recent Tsunamis that hit Indonesia and thailand, two elephants working near the ocean beach suddenly refused to obey their handlers. There were a group of children playing nearby. The two elephants lifted the children to their backs and herded other children there wasn't room for on their backs to higher ground. Those two elephants that day saved more than a dozen human childrens lives that day, and that of their keepers because they followed along trying to get the elephants back under their control.

I'm glad you remembered this account. Truly amazing their response during the horrible tsunami.
