A great post that took me back to the thirties in Eureka, KS, only the theater was called the Princess and yes on Main Street. Thanks for the memories. Gail

Hey, Tom,
We had a Strand Theatre near where I grew up, but they never gave away dishes. We got those in boxes of laundry detergent, with purchases of tea, or from the local grocery stores. I remember saving my nickel allowance for a month to go see "WIND IN THE SADDLE." Can't remember a thing about the film but the title. I know it was a western, but that's the limit of my memory. Back then, we could watch the film more than once. I saw TALE OF TWO CITIES three times in one afternoon. Cried every time. Thanks for sharing. As always well written. Janet

Hi Tom--lots of good moments spent in those old theaters. The really good ones were in downtown Chicago which we got to now and then. They were really elegant and even had stage shows along with the movie.

Hi Tom,
Loved reading about your movie-going adventures and the details you used to make us readers feel like we were right there with you and Gerry. I don't recall any freebies being given away such as breakable dishes, but I do remember that at holiday times we could bring a toy for a needy child and obtain a free movie matinee pass in exchange for it.
And Necco Wafers were always a hit with me from the concession stand, mainly because they tasted so sugary sweet, lasted longer than a chocolate bar, and came in such pretty colors...light green, pink, lavendar, pale yellow. But even the white ones tasted delicious! Thanks for remindng me about how much fun going to the movies used to be, and about Necco Wafers. It's been years since I tasted one or even thought about them.
Blessings,
Sandi in FL.
