What a great story BJ. I learned something new, too. I'd have headed to Home Depot to look for a "shed" too, but my excuse is that I grew up in the big city. :) I especially liked the ending paragraph about the cycle of the seasons. Very nicely done.

Thanks for the comment Nancy. I grew up in the country, but moved to the city when I was in my early twenties. I guess I was gone too long. Thanks again, BJ

It must be a different climate, or perhaps a different type of deer. Where I live in the catskills, by this time of year it is rare to find a "shed." The little critters of the forest feed on them during the winter and they are usually gone by now. In reference to only does having antlers, that is generally so, but not always. That is why in our state at lest, they do not mention "bucks" in the game laws. They are referred to as "antlered deer," because occasionally a doe is found to have antlers. It is to early here for crocuses or tulips, but they will be welcomed when they come.

Thanks for the comment Fred. Bob told me that a doe can have antlers, but it isn't the norm. Bob has several "sheds" that have little animal chew marks, but he has still been able to use portions to make pens, maybe we need to start looking earlier. BJ

Looking earlier is only feasable if there is no snow. That is why there are so few of them found. The rodents that eat them tunnel under the snow. We need x-ray vision to see them. The rodents don't.

Even tho I've lived in the mountains of Montana the last 30 years, I have to admit, you had me going for a spell. Tell your hubby to stay away from the gargantuan sheds in Yellowstone Park...they put you in the hoosgow if caught with one in the back of your truck.... Great story....Kathe
