Yes yes, I know what missing you is all about, for I'm still missing my Ken, even moreso every time I open a drawer somewhere. The other day I popped open the glove compartment in my truck, and there were his driving glasses in their case. Just sat there and had a good bawl, then went about my day. No, we needn't have anything black to mourn, we just need good memories to give us a smile....often. Well done, Kathe

An excellently-written essay, from the opening "hook" to the wrap-up at the end. Action is so effective as a "hook." Your assessment of mourning is poignant and on the mark. "Doing" something, such as gathering photos, creating an essay, writing a post, is very healing, and helps us ". . . find our own ways to mourn and remember." Thank you for assisting us to do that. Yes indeed, we are missing Shannon. Aunt Carol

Thanks for sharing the words I've felt but couldn't put to paper. Very touching. You have a true voice for writing.

I couldn't read this when it was first posted because of my tears. But today is much better and I really don't want to send "letters edged in black" as they used to do. If fact there is a song with that title. So many things remind us of others long gone. Shannon is pleased with your memories. Mom

What a sad but lovely essay with a very fine message to it. That old saying, "Gone but not forgotten" came to mind as I read. My heart goes out to you and your family as you continue to miss Shannon. Last year she had posted some cookie recipes, which I saved. I plan to make the peppermint cookies next week and I know I will think of your family while I am making them. May God bring you comfort through the little things that are now treasured memories.

Congratulations on your win. This is the third time I have read this essay and each time I find my eyes misting over. What a wonderful tribute. BJ

I would have loved to know Shannon. And that's a tribute to your wonderful essay. I recently lost a very close friend to cancer and I'm still inconsolable. How heartbroken you and your family must be. May you be spared further sorrow.

This is such a beautiful piece. I have two sisters, one who is not well and probably will not live to old age, whatever old age is. But this piece connects with everyone regardless to whether there is a sister or not. We've all lost and we've all grieved.
