A warm and hear-touching story BJ. It's definitely true that the Christmases with the most gifts and expensive decorations aren't necessarily the best ones, or the ones we remember forever. Thanks for sharing this lovely memory.

Upon second reading, I'm again touched by this story. It brings back memories when I was in 5th grade. My dad was hospitalized after a terrible auto accident. Christmas was to be pretty skimpy that year, but our teacher sent home the classroom Christmas tree with us when school closed for the holiday. There may not have been many presents, but the tree brightened our holiday.

Beautiful story! This should be printed in the Chicken Soup for the Soul.... and I do hope to read it again there.

It has always amazed me that some of the simplest of things can bring back the fondest of memories.

You're right, it's always the tough years that stand out in our memories, the ones that make us even more grateful for the good times. Razoo story as always, BJ...Kath

Dear BJ,

This story could be a child's Christmas classic. The title caught my eye as I always feel sad when I see beautiful Christmas trees that a week before drew gasps of suprise and wonder, now dumped out on the sidewalk to roll in the wind or lie unwanted in the snow.

When I was a young mom and money was scarce, I'd get a tree for $5 at the YWCA on Christmas Eve. Congratulatons on a beautiful story and winning the well deserved prize. Veronica

Congratulations, B J! This story tugged at my heart. I loved it. It should be in a book. I think many of us have memories like this, where something meagre turned into a magical memory. Thank you for the reminder.
