Hi Carol,

I read the first Harry Potter book when it came out because, like you, I wanted to know what kids were reading. I was thoroughly enchanted by it and can see why kids like it. What a storyteller Ms Rowling is. There has been much criticism of the magic/occult within the series, but kids have always loved reading about magical things. Look at the fairy tales of long ago--many had magic of some kind in them. I liked your comments when explaining the photos that accompanied your essay, lots of good thoughts there.

Those who oppose the magic of Harry must have been deprived of all the great magical stories I read during my youth, and still enjoy reading today. What better way to stir our imagination than reading an author's answer to the inspirational question, "What if?" BJ
