Gail,

My mother made almost all my clothes. A great-aunt in Minnesota sent her feedsacks, and she always made my pajamas from those. To have a store-bought dress was a real treat. Now I know that those treasures made by my mother were the best ever.

Gail, your story triggered memories for me. My mother, a child of the depression, made my first grade dresses from feedsacks; and they were beautiful. She often made patterns from newspaper or brown paper sacks, and my clothes were as pretty as any of the "store-bought" things my more affluent friends wore. Thank you so much for reminding me.

now that you mention it, I too remember Mother cutting out patterns on brown paper bags. I was allowed to cut the bags so they would open out flat. Thanks for adding to MY MEMORIES!

Wonderful story from a fellow Kansasan. In fact, I grew up in Augusta - just a matter of miles from you. I missed the feedsack era, but my mother also made nearly all of my garments and this brought back wonderful memories. I can still picture some of my dresses as if they were hanging in my closet now.

What a precious, priceless story of times remembered. Don't you wish modern day children could experience some of what you got to experience? And don't you wish you still had at least one of those feedsack dresses you mother made for you?
Thank-you so much for sharing. I sincerely like the way you write and plan to read every story in your list! What a treat!

The photos are great, and DO add a lot to the story, which is a terrific trip down memory lane, by the way! Carol

I love this story. I grew up in Woodward, from 1955 to 1968. I loved all the clothes my mother made for me, too. I did have a few store-bought dresses. But, the ones Momma made were the favorites. I'm 57 and would still love to have her sew for me; she quit when I got too fat to look cute in them. lol Thank you for this story.

Thanks for your comments. Now I'm wondering how you found my story. I'm also trying to find out about a small Vining church east of Woodward. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Comments are one of the best parts of Our Echoes. As ever, Gail
