What a heartwarmer you've given us, Nancy. I went to school with at least a half dozen polio victims, some in braces and some not. Two of our classmates were in iron lungs, one the principal's daughter. Like you, I remember each of their names, but somehow lost track of them after graduation from high school. Wish I hadn't!

What an endearing story of determination and inner strength! It seems that incidents that last just a few moments are the ones we remember best. Keep writing.

Thanks for such a touching piece from your school days. In the fifth grade in 1950, I, too, saw the effects of polio in some classmates...people I hadn't thought about for a long time until I read your story. Thank you.

Yes, Nancy, life is indeed filled with numerous "Pay attention to this" moments. Your story is a gentle reminder of occurences that really matter. I hope Rochele reads it, wherever she is now.
You write so well.
Sincerely,
Sandi in FL.
