Wow, that brings back some memories to me as well. Maybe others will be inspired to write about their childhood 4th of July experiences too. We always had hand churned ice cream.

For a few moments of reading this, I was transported to your Grandma's house filled with Fourth of July company, enjoying the busy-ness that preceded the day's fun. I love your descriptions of everything as the holiday unfolded. Am left with a question: wonder why men and boys don't whittle anymore? Sadly, perhaps it's a lost art/pastime.
