Originally from Puget Sound, we and our cars boarded many a ferry to the San Juans and other islands. A good deal of Seattle travels back and forth daily on the ferries. This big caribou is some ship though with all the amenities.

Of course ships are referred to as "she." Altho most men dislike acknowledging the fact, it's the she's of this world that raise the beauty and toil of mankind.

The pictures are fantastic....Kath

Beautiful pictures, sent to me by a great friend. Went over on the ferry (Carson??) in 1973, my husband was transferred from Montreal to St John's for work. We loved Mount Pearl, and the surroundings, would love to go back one day soon.

Well, thank you for your kind remarks.
C'mon back, the Rock is still here, my parents live in Mount Pearl, and my family is scattered around everywhere. I was away, because of my husband's job-(RCMP), for 32 years and came back to the Rock within the Sea in 2000 to retire at the age of 51 to pursue other interests.
Photography being one of them.
If you go to http://community.webshots.com/user/jarvislowe, you can take a virtual tour of Newfoundland, keep you going for now!*lol*
I came home, live on the land in our new home we designed for ourselves and built for retirement, and we have never looked back. It was like we never left.
You will be welcomed 'Newfie Style' when you return.
Rgs,
Bonnie.

Hi Bonnie...Great story, I crossed to the Island in 1986 after My Dad passed away...One of those things My Mom said..."You Father & I where Going To"...Well they never so I took Mom to Her Dad's home on POOLS ISLAND...That was a wonderful trip...Thanks for the wonderful memories Bonnie...SO remember to all who read this comment...If You Want To Do Something ...JUST DO IT while you can...As for ships being SHE...I would think it is the fine lines and beauty to the eye and the stemma to withstand the seas...

Hello from 'THE ROCK WITHIN THE SEA'!

Thank you again for your kind words. The Caribou is special. On a summer day, with calm seas we never go inside. We find a sunchair and enjoy the freedom of the sea.

As for calling the boats 'She', you input is great. I call them She' because they are very strong, attractive, and get the job done. Also, like women, they hold up the sky!!

Rgs,
Bonnie.

us newfoundlanders call alot of stuff he or she. We refer to cars as she also. Just a thought though on why do we do it. I have never heard a mainlander do it. But certainly that is what makes newfoundlanders so unique and loveable.

Good point now that you mention it. Other than sailors on the RCMP boats, or the people who worked on the ferry, or the Newfoundland fishermen in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, in all the 33 years I spent off the Island they were the only ones who referred to boats as 'SHE'--! Must check that out with my Nova Scotia buddies.
