Kathe, this hits me alot. I have cancer and my husband has parkinson's, I try very hard to smile alot, and always keep a good attitude. But my husband is dead pan face, and depressed alot. I miss the days when we had so much fun. Thank you for that beautiful story.

Oh love your heart, Barbara. You're not having an easy time of it and my prayers go out to you and your husband. I lost an arm in a horrid accident a few years ago and at 74 have crippling rheumatoid. I decided I better find something in my life to smile about, because nobody was going to do it for me. Then I began to realize, as in the story, that there are many dear souls out there worse off than me. I took up the pen to make notes and here I am, hoping that anything I share is comfort to others. My husband had some pretty depressing days as well, but he never saw me cry or down in the dobber. They gave him something for severe depression. Keep your chin up always and lean on others to take up your burden when the going gets too much. Write to me if you feel the need and I'll hold your hand...........Kath

Darlin' Kath,
Again, and again. May you keep on writing.... you are a wonder, my friend.
May the Lord watch over you and Angels be your constant companions all the days of your life.
Love, Toni

I always enjoy everything Kathe Campbell writes but "When You're Smiling" has got to be one of the best stories Kathe has written. Keep up the good work, Kathe, and write us some more stories.

Thank you, Kathe, for the reminder that mirth is God's medicine. During the holiday season I'm one of those folks who has a propensity to get depressed, but your story reminded me that there are numerous other people worse off than I am. Years ago my mother used to say that if all of our problems were hung out on a line, you would still take yours, and I would still take mine.
Blessing to you in this new year.

I especially love this line "Cheerful people are like sunbeams, radiating cheer in their presence." So true! Wonderful piece of writing, as always. Keep smiling.

I love the story of the 'old' lady and the quilt. It may have struck home a little closer just because I went to see quilts at the museum this weekend and was both pleased and dismayed to see what people in need had sewn to keep their families warm, is now considered an art form. I remember my mother sitting in a barely warm room, running her old treadle sewing machine, stitching together oblongs cut from distant relatives discards, and making quilts for her family. It was art, but it was beauty of soul. That's also what is reflected all through your piece. My hat and heart are doffed to you. Jo

You did it again, Kathe...took lemons and made lemonade, while smiling the entire time. Let's raise our cups and say in unison, "To LIFE!"
