Very interesting story. Wouldn't you like to know something about the architect and the how and why of his plan? I'm glad you had the picture to post along with the story.

Yes Nancy, I would like to know those things. I doubt there was ever a professional architect. I think it was just an inovative farmer with an idea. It is a peculiar shape for a barn, but there have been other structures in these parts that do have some similarity. Some, not entirely. There is an Octagon shaped house that is probably older than that barn within 25 miles of it. There is also, at a greater distance, a very large round or circular barn going way way back also, that is built entirely out of cement and cobblestone. All are most interesting. The area was settled originaly by the Palatine Dutch and during the revolution was the western frontier. Perhaps the architecture of those buildings was influenced by Dutch buildings of old. It would be very interesting to know.

This is very interesting, I love stories on local houses or as you did barns. I love visiting them, or doing tours on them. I enjoyed this alot. Thank you. Barbara

Fascinating, Fred! I certainly will look it up if I'm ever in that part of the country. What a clever innovation! You're probably right, that it was a creative farmer thinking up a more efficient way to do things. Carol
