I would have loved being at your parents dinner table. I am interested in the glass churn. I never knew them to make one of glass. Ours were of wood. Nostalgia at it's tastiest for sure.

Fred, a metal top screwed on the glass and the Daisy logo was on the side. The paddles in Mother's churn were wooden but later they made them with medal paddles. There was a handle that turned the paddles through a series of gears. It was a fun to see the butter start forming. Gail

Dear Gail,

You made my mouth water with the wonderful descriptions of the bounty you had at your Thanksgiving table. Food and Families somehow go together, don't they? I'm glad Thanksgiving is early this year, so we don't have as long to wait for those special treats.

Oh my, Gail, another lovely recollection of family that I love reading about. You seem to come up with new ones for every season and I'll look forward to Christmas sharings. Just one thing has me puzzled. Where were the cranberries in your mother's menu?

Well Kathe they don't grow in Kansas and we would have had to go to town to buy them. It was a few years later that cranberries showed up in the raw in stores and much later before the canned variety was seen on the grocery shelves. I don't cook cranberries even now. That's heritage I guess. Maybe little sis, Carol J, can add to my memories. As ever, Gail

By the time I came along, and was in high school, (and you and Melba were both married with kids) I remember us trying out canned cranberry sauce one Thanksgiving. I thought it was nectar from the gods! Mother thought it was a waste of money, as we had all those other delicacies we picked or grew. But I could talk her into splurging on another can now and then. Think I was spoiled just a bit? Excellent story, Big Sis. I especially like the tie-up ending. Little Sis Carol

I remember stringing raw cranberries into chains to decorate the Christmas tree but not eating them. Gail

I enjoyed your story, it brought similar memories to my mind as I read it. Especially the part about the chickens.
Hope you and your family had another Thanksgiving to add to your memories.
