| Biography: | I was born in 1916 in the great state of Texas, so am now 90 years young. In 1920 my family moved to Harlingen, Texas where I started school in 1923. The following year we moved about thirteen miles from Harlingen to the city of Santa Rosa. That's where I attended and graduated from high school in 1932. We moved to Houston in 1934. I married Hassie Hammett in 1937. In 1940 I became a letter carrier for the U.S. post office. Then I took up watch repairing and moved to San Marcos, TX in 1946. Two years later we moved to LaFeria, TX where I held a job as watch repairman for a jewelry store in Harlingen for the next eighteen years. Then bought an appliance store in LaFeria, but later sold it and went back to the same jewelry store for eight more years. I retired in 1982 to my five acre place near LaFeria, where we set out citrus and avocado trees, which froze in 1983. Then we raised farm crops until 1991, when we planted two acres of orange trees and enjoyed the fruit. We ate all we could and sold the rest. I also had a complete woodworking shop and made many clocks which I gave away, including two grandfather clocks for a customer in Harlingen and one each for our two children, a son and daughter. In 2004 my wife and I moved to Weatherford, TX to be near our grown daughter and her family. My beloved wife died in December of the same year, only three days before our 67th wedding anniversary. Now I spend my time repairing clocks which neighbors bring to me. I also enjoy spending time on my computer, keeping up with friends and relatives via e-mail and laughing at jokes and humorous true stories, which I share from Texas to Georgia, Florida, Australia and other places. Most of what I write about is my childhood and early years when life was more innocent, carefree and less hectic, when times were much different than they are now. |
