Anne was raised a lady in Charleston, South Carolina, which even in the early 1700s was already one of the most refined cities of the south.
At heart, though, she was a wild Irish lass, and as headstrong and bold as one might expect.
Anne was born in County Cork, Ireland in 1698, the illegitimate daughter of attorney William Cormac and his maidservant, Peg Brennan.
Cormac's indiscretion forced him to flee Ireland (and his irate wife), seeking and finding his daughter and mistress, who had been transported to the colonies when Mrs. Cormac had the maid arrested for theft.
